Train/Bus
It is possible to take a combination of train and or bus to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco and Sacramento; however, it is a long and convoluted trip (about 7 hours from San Francisco and about 3 hours from Sacramento).
From San Francisco: you will need to take the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) from the airport or from downtown San Francisco to the Richmond Station and transfer to the Amtrak train.

From Sacramento: you will need to take the Yolobus from the airport to the Sacramento train station (bus stop is nearby).

The train takes you to the town of Truckee, from where a bus takes you to Lake Tahoe.
