Transportation

Airports

The closest airport is the Reno/Tahoe International Airport (45 minutes). The Sacramento Airport is about two hours away. The closest major international airport is the San Francisco Airport, which is about 3½ hours away by car. Please see the links below for each airport to find information about rental car information. There is a shuttle to the Tahoe area from the Reno Airport; information listed below.

Rental Cars

Rental cars tend to be relatively cheap in the US, particularly if arranged ahead of time and picked up at the airport. See for example:

Train/Bus

It is possible to take a combination of train and or bus to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco and Sacramento; however, it is a long and convoluted trip (about 7 hours from San Francisco and about 3 hours from Sacramento).

From San Francisco: you will need to take the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) from the airport or from downtown San Francisco to the Richmond Station and transfer to the Amtrak train.

From Sacramento: you will need to take the Yolobus from the airport to the Sacramento train station (bus stop is nearby).

The train takes you to the town of Truckee, from where a bus takes you to Lake Tahoe.
