Tahoe Science Consortium
Formed in August 2005, the Tahoe Science Consortium (TSC) exists through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among research institutions and resource management agencies. Together, these entities have committed to developing and maintaining relationships that support the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the unique environmental values of the Lake Tahoe Basin Agencies and institutions signing onto this commitment include:
Research Institutions
- Desert Research Institute
- Sierra Nevada College
- University of California , Davis
- University of Nevada , Reno
- U.S. Geological Survey
- USFS Pacific Southwest Research Station
Resource Management Agencies
- California Environmental Protection Agency
- California Resources Agency
- Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources
- Tahoe Regional Planning Agency
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
- USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit
- Natural Resources Conservation Service
Signatories to the MOU recognize that scientific inquiry, resource assessment, and interpretation of available data are critical to the development and implementation of effective environmental policy. Thus, the mission of the TSC is to provide environmental managers and decision makers with comprehensive and well-synthesized scientific findings drawn from research, monitoring, and modeling. A Committee of Scientists and TSC director are working to achieve the MOU commitments and TSC mission.
The TSC has received a Sierra Nevada Public Lands Management Act grant to establish operations and begin to address science needs in the Lake Tahoe Basin . During its first year of operation the TSC will:
- Prepare a Lake Tahoe Science Plan to help guide science investments over the next 10 years.
- Develop an independent peer review process, a critical component in the development of sound science that resource managers can use.
- Develop and maintain the capacity for ongoing interaction between the scientific community and Lake Tahoe resource management agencies.
- Provide scientific expertise and advice that contributes to informed planning, assessment, and adaptive management.
The TSC has established office space in the new Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences. Please contact Zach Hymanson, TSC Director at (775) 881-7561 to obtain more information.
